About Darryl Roberts

Mr. Roberts has thirty-five years in the death care industry. At the age of 13 he was working in a cemetery as a custodian digging graves and mowing grass. After college he managed a cemetery in Virginia for a year prior to becoming Business Manager for Associated Cemetery estates, a holding company with about twenty-seven cemeteries and five funeral homes. In 1980 he was promoted to President and remained in that position until the company sold in 1994. After retiring Mr. Roberts wrote the book “Profits of Death” which won the award for best non fiction paperback from the National Association of Independent Publishers in 1997.

    I came across your site on the Web and have a quick question for you for a story I’m writing. Wondering if modern day morticians ever use quicklime anymore to mask the smell of decomposition/prevent seepage. If so, do you keep it around? My hunch is that it’s a thing of the past and isn’t used really anymore.

  2. I do not believe that quicklime has been used in the industry for many years. There are now better methods for masking smells plus with cooling units, there is very little in-house decomposition.
